Friendship by Henry David Thoreau

 Friendship by Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, philosopher and leading transcendentalist. He was well known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of historical change and natural decay. He also advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs.

In this poem Henry describes his feelings, emotions, and sentiments as well as he beautifully described love through friendship. The poem highlights the theme of love and friendship with the philosophical idea of Henry David Thoreau.

'According to Henry David Thoreau love and friendship are both on the same level as synonyms of each other, he analyzed it from roots and found that they both are equal and equally both are important in any relationship.

Love
It is the greatest feeling in the world that is the base of every relationship, no feeling is superior to love in life. With love in heart, person can win anyone and anything in his life. Love can be seen in many relationships: between children and parents, friends, couples. But it is incomplete without friendship. Because a certain percentage of friendship is necessary in order to make a successful relationship.

Friendship
Thoreau describes that it is the greatest gift that you can give to yourself. Everyone needs at least one good friend in his life because friends are an important and crucial part of our life. In a difficult situation, friends are our backbone who support us with whom we can share our sorrow and happiness. True friends are those who love you unconditionally supports you and believe in you. Hereby saying all these poets try to co-relate friendship and love and say that both go in hand in hand.

In his attempt to determine the limit of friendship, he immersed himself in the ocean of friendship. His deep exploration made him realize that the roots of friendship are intertwined, inseparable and undetermined.

In this way poet sings the glory of friendship over a love that is the friendship which always leads towards love.

Expert Lectures on ELT by Attanu Bhatattacharya Sir

Expert Lectures on ELT by Attanu Bhatattacharya Sir

In our English department, Dilip Barad sir has organized an expert lecture on ELT. During those three days, Atanu Bhattacharya sir dealt with ELT and he also talks about the current trend in the field of research regarding language and literature. It was quite an informative and interesting session for us. There are certain things which are known to us, though we are unknown about this. Sir made us aware of some aspects which we are already known to us.

Here follow mentioned are some points that were discussed by sir during his lectures.

Testing and Evaluation
Atanu sir made us aware of the clear difference between testing, evaluation and assessment.
Testing - measured by score
Evaluation/Assessment - measured by the feedback it indicates how much you have to improve.

When we talk about these two, we think that these three are similar components but actually, they aren't. Testing is mainly about the score, it is measured by the score students get in the test. While evaluation and assessment are not about that, mainly they involve feedback from others which suggests to them how to improve learning better. Then sir talked about various types of testing.

1) Proficiency Test
2) Achievement Test
3) Diagnostic Test
4) Placement Test
5) Norm-referenced Testing
6) Criterion-referenced Testing

Furthermore sir talked about key concepts of testing such as validity, reliability and backwash and how it affects the process of testing and evaluation.

Language learning through Literature

Sir talked about literature as an authentic material of language teaching. We can learn through poems, novels, and fiction which helps us in language learning. Literature helps in developing cognitive and metacognitive skills and also we can develop lateral skills.

In the last lecture, sir gave us information about research in language and literature. He also introduced us with current trendy areas of in the literature and language such as Digital Humanities, comparative literature  which are not mainly restricted to the study of classical texts only.

Thus it was a very fruitful session for us and in which we explored the various concepts of ELT.
