Movie riview: Midnight's Children's

Movies Review: Midnight's Children

Midnight's Children, here the title of the film also considered as one character in the film. It is based on the novel of Salman Rushdie's (British Indian writer) novel 'Midnight's Children'. The film directed by Deepa Mehta, it was released on 9 September 2012 (Toronto International Film Festival)

Shiva and Saleem born within moments of India gaining independence from Britain, it is like born of India and Pakistan. Moments of Partition, Marxism,  Miscegenation and when Indira Gandhi came into power and she has taken the step of emergency in India and how India grow and what was the situation of people in India, we can see in the movie.

Marxism
When they born at that time different types of issues were raised outside like Marxism, Emergency and all so one character Mary changed the child's label and poor's child became suddenly rich and rich child become poor. Her lover was a Marxist so she has done that. It is showing the situation of people in India during independence.
If we talk about current time than the situation is the same rich becoming richer, farmers are doing hard work on their farm but dealers and agents are earning more than them and big companies like reliance and Tata purchasing raw materials and they send to in the global market and they are more earning.

Telepathy, Black Magic and Technology
Saleem was talking in telepathy with all children, who was born same time on that Midnight. Parvati named character has a power like Abrakadabra, she was doing black magic in the movie it is showing us the superstition of Indian people.
In some of the scenes, we can see India's Space mission moments and maybe the Nuclear Program of India also shown. In the era of technology, people were believing and still believe in all these superstition things.

Miscegenation :
When Vanita (street singer) came to sing and earn money from that landlord's house at that time white colonizer Methwold touches her in the back and she tries to go away, maybe it was not by her interest but the situation of the black poor lady was not good so she was in sexual relation with Methwold. Saleem was her child and real father was Methwold. There is also confusion in Parvati's child that who was the real father Saleem or Shiva ???

The Reluctant Fundamentalist

The Reluctant Fundamentalist movie directed by Mira nair, it was released in 2012. It is a political thriller film based on Mohsin Hamid's novel.

Changez Khan narrates his story about his life in America. He is the hero of the film, he was very intellectual, he portrayed as a businessman and highly reputed figure in the movie. When the incident of the attack on WTC tower suddenly his life changed because he was born in Islamic religion and he was from an eastern country. He suffered a lot, people and his collogues abused and FBI also. Everyone was treated like he also part of terrorist groups. His personal life also disturbed because his lover Erica used his photographs for her project for her benefits, so he comes back to Pakistan and he starts revolutionary lectures in University. He wants to live a happy life in America but he not able to live peacefully in America or Pakistan.

Frame narrative technique

Changezkhan saying the main story about the various incident of his life and parallel one story going on means story within the story. Bobby named one character follows him and he was spying so one story is presenting the present situation.
The present story was very thrilling, I was eagerly waiting to know what will be next incident, this Frame narrative technique very catchy to attract the audience.

Postcolonial view

When Changezkhan abused many times he returned in Pakistan then also Bobby (spy) came to meet Changezkhan as a journalist, Bobby (spy) tries to get information about Changezkhan that what he is doing in Pakistan. Bobby blames him that you are teaching terrorism in university. Changezkhan's innocent fellow died in the fire by Bobby, American agent's disloyalty we can see in the movie.

Tag of Pakistani

Changezkhan's beloved Erica mention one line about him that "I had a Pakistani once" maybe she said innocently but this is also hurt to Changezkhan. Western countries mostly treating as a terrorist to the person who came from Islamic countries like Pakistan and Afghan and Iran-Iraq.

The Black Prince
‘The Black Prince’ is an international historical film directed by Kavi Raz, it was published in 2017. 'The Black Prince' is a story of Queen Victoria and the Last King of Punjab, Maharajah Duleep Singh.
Duleep Singh did lifelong struggles to regain his Kingdom. It takes him on an extraordinary journey across the world. In the end, he not able to get the victory but it was not only about kingmanship, it was for all who tried hard or fought for their pride and rights.

Postcolonial View: Dilemma of identity

He was treated as royal prince by Queen Victoria's family but his attitude of prince I can't see in the movie. Even Victoria called him as a Black Prince. It is about inferiority and superiority.

His mother Jind Kaur said that you are born to become King, not just a prince but the whole life he treated as Black Prince so maybe one fear of inferiority he was in dilemma of identity. He lived life as a Christian and also as Sikh.

Screening of Kya Kehna in the context of The Scarlet Letter

Screening Kya Kehna in the context of The Scarlet Letter

What are the names of the protagonists in both the works?

Ans- Hester Prynne is a protagonist of the novel The scarlet letter and
Priya Baxi (Preity Zinta) is a protagonist of kya kahena movie.

Write their story in brief.

Kya kahena

A story about a girl named Priya (Preity Zinta), a first-year college student, cheerful, brilliant, popular, who is the apple of her parents' eyes. She defied the Indian culture when she got pregnant before marriage by Rahul Modi (Saif Ali Khan). Priya's life suddenly gets more complicated than she had ever imagined. Rather to abort her child, she decides to give a birth to the child. Her childhood friend Ajay (Chandrachur Singh) who is secretly in love with her helps her. The support of her family helps her to overcome the society's hypocritical condemnation and resolve the crisis.

The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter begins with a prelude in which an unnamed narrator explains the novel's origin. While working at the Salem Custom House, the narrator discovered in the attic a manuscript accompanied by a beautiful scarlet letter "A." After the narrator lost his job, he decided to develop the story told in the manuscript into a novel. The Scarlet Letter is that novel.

The novel is set in seventeenth-century Boston, a city governed by strict Puritan law. The story begins as Hester Prynne, the novel's protagonist, is led out of a prison carrying an infant, named Pearl, in her arms. A bright red "A" is embroidered on her chest. A crowd waits expectantly as Hester is forced to climb up a scaffold to endure public shame for her sin. While on the scaffold, Hester is terrified to recognize her estranged husband, Chillingworth, in the crowd. He recognizes her too, and is shocked. Chillingworth pretends not to know Hester, and learns her story from a man in the crowd: she was married to an English scholar who was supposed to follow her to Boston but never showed up. After two years she fell into sin, committing the adultery that resulted in her baby and the scarlet "A" on her breast. Chillingworth predicts the unknown man will be found out, but when the beloved local Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale commands Hester to reveal the man's name, she refuses and is sent back to her prison cell. Chillingworth poses as a doctor to get inside the prison to speak with Hester, and there forces her to promise never to reveal that he's her husband.

What is the role played by society in Hester’s life?

We all know that we did a lots of mistakes and sin in our life but we are not blaming our self in front of all but when other person declared with any sin or any mistakes we blame him easily some time society become violent for him. In the scarlet letter Hester also facing same problem. She has to wear A (adultery) symbol because she gets pregnant and she did not say who is the father of that child. She has given birth to her child in prison and lifetime she has to suffer mentally in public place but she was happy with pearl.

What is the role played by society in Priya’s life?
Ans-
Priya finds out she is pregnant, she informs her horrified parents, and they approach Rahul's parents (Navneet Nishan, Rajeev Verma) for marriage plans, but to everyone's surprise, Rahul turns them down but Priya chooses to keep the child. Her decision prompts her father to chuck her out the house. Alone and neglected Priya is devastated, but her parents and brothers find it hard to live without her and they bring her home. She now has to face society and try to overcome the disdain of her neighbors, among others. Society virtually ostracizes her and her family. She eventually gains the support of those who had earlier disrespected her.

Compare and contrast the male characters, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, Rahul, and Ajay.

-Rahul belongs to rich family and he was egoistic character

-Arthur was priest and he belongs with religious background, but he helped Hester.

-Roger is going far from her but when he returns he was doing force to make relationship with Hester. He becomes violent also in some scene.

-Ajay is shown childhood friend of Priya, He is soft hearted, he knows everything about priya's life but he was ready to marry her and live with priya.

What are the reasons that Arthur Dimmesdale and Rahul do not come forward to accept their fatherhood? How do you they differ and what are the similarities?

Rahul is not really interested as he has many more girlfriends than he can handle. But Priya seems all the more attractive when her brothers prevent him from seeing her, and so he makes it a mission to charm her and win her over, which he does.

In the sacarlet letter Arthur Dimmesdale was a priest so he was not ready to accept fatherhood of that child but we can say he was helping her and he was giving warmth to child when they were neglected by society.
Rahul was behaving like it was just like a game and here Arthur has force of religious matter so he not able to accept fatherhood. Rahul showing ego of richness and Arthur has to follow Religious things but they both are actually selfish, because they are not taking his responsibilities.

How do you see Hester and Priya as individuals?

When Rahul turns them down but Priya chooses to keep the child. Her decision prompts her father to chuck her out the house. In the end  Priya manages to change Rahul's views as well and he decides to marry her. However, Priya has already given her heart to Ajay and they get married.

In the Scarlet letter Hester has to go in prison but she didn't said why she became pregnant and who is responsible for that. They both have faced rigid society.

Write a critical note on the end of the movie and the novel. Why do you think the novelist has not given happy ending?

Nathanial Hawthorne wants to say reality of the time and about characters, how they were treating each other in relationship. If we talk about movie than mostly director direct film as a purpose of entertain people but some directors likes to stay near the story.

This is my opinion that happy ending through females and family can satisfy to see movie because we full fill our ego When we see in the end Arthur, Hester and Pearl stay together. It is also positive message for society.

Movie Review: Article 15

#Article_15
1)

Thank you so much Dilip sir and Mahendrasir Parmar
