"The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway

Thinking activity on "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway

This blog is a part of my academic activity
which was given to us during classroom discussion.

Can you mark a critical phase of your life?

Yes, but I will share later.

Do you have any such person whom you recall in the crisis?

Yes, I meet children those who are poor but they are working not bagging. They are wandering one place to another place so they have a different experience of life. I learn a lot of things from them they are inspiring me to do something in life.
They are saying that, you have everything in your life, you have to face many hurdles on your way but don't look back because problems are not a big problem but your attitude about the problem is a big problem so go ahead and full fill your dreams.

What is the importance of dream of lions in the novel?

Santiago dreams of Lions on the beach in Africa three times. They represent virility and youth. The lion imagery at the end of the novel represents the hope of eternal life.
Hemingway quoting Santiago, the fisherman, talking to his young apprentice:
''When I was your age I was before the mast on a square the rigged ship that ran to Africa and I have seen lions on the beaches in the evening.''
When we see the lions next mentioned, it's in regard to Santiago's dreams:
''He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women, nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife. He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach. They played like young cats in the dusk and he loved them as he loved the boy.''

Do you have any such scene or image you frequently like to visit?

Yes, I prefer to seat alone on the bank of rivers or on the beach where I can talk with myself...

Highest point of the mountain gives inner peace that I have feel in Himachal Pradesh…

Varanasi is one of my favorite place where I can feel freedom, Ganga's Ghat giving calmness to mind.

What is the reason of your obsession for that scene?

Day by day life moving faster and faster and we have to run with people. We are living life but somewhere we forgot to enjoy life that’s why I like to go far from the speed world. Nature accepts everyone in any condition there is no partiality in nature like ore society so everyone can enjoy and get peace from nature so this the reason of my obsession for in nature.

Replace the old man with yourself. How would be the approach if you fail like the old man in life ?

Santiago is like One Man Army,

If I replace myself with old man than to face society will be more complicated for me. It is easy to face other problems rather than society because they are taunting more so I have to make my willpower strong.

Screening of Kya Kehna in the context of The Scarlet Letter

Screening Kya Kehna in the context of The Scarlet Letter

What are the names of the protagonists in both the works?

Ans- Hester Prynne is a protagonist of the novel The scarlet letter and
Priya Baxi (Preity Zinta) is a protagonist of kya kahena movie.

Write their story in brief.

Kya kahena

A story about a girl named Priya (Preity Zinta), a first-year college student, cheerful, brilliant, popular, who is the apple of her parents' eyes. She defied the Indian culture when she got pregnant before marriage by Rahul Modi (Saif Ali Khan). Priya's life suddenly gets more complicated than she had ever imagined. Rather to abort her child, she decides to give a birth to the child. Her childhood friend Ajay (Chandrachur Singh) who is secretly in love with her helps her. The support of her family helps her to overcome the society's hypocritical condemnation and resolve the crisis.

The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter begins with a prelude in which an unnamed narrator explains the novel's origin. While working at the Salem Custom House, the narrator discovered in the attic a manuscript accompanied by a beautiful scarlet letter "A." After the narrator lost his job, he decided to develop the story told in the manuscript into a novel. The Scarlet Letter is that novel.

The novel is set in seventeenth-century Boston, a city governed by strict Puritan law. The story begins as Hester Prynne, the novel's protagonist, is led out of a prison carrying an infant, named Pearl, in her arms. A bright red "A" is embroidered on her chest. A crowd waits expectantly as Hester is forced to climb up a scaffold to endure public shame for her sin. While on the scaffold, Hester is terrified to recognize her estranged husband, Chillingworth, in the crowd. He recognizes her too, and is shocked. Chillingworth pretends not to know Hester, and learns her story from a man in the crowd: she was married to an English scholar who was supposed to follow her to Boston but never showed up. After two years she fell into sin, committing the adultery that resulted in her baby and the scarlet "A" on her breast. Chillingworth predicts the unknown man will be found out, but when the beloved local Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale commands Hester to reveal the man's name, she refuses and is sent back to her prison cell. Chillingworth poses as a doctor to get inside the prison to speak with Hester, and there forces her to promise never to reveal that he's her husband.

What is the role played by society in Hester’s life?

We all know that we did a lots of mistakes and sin in our life but we are not blaming our self in front of all but when other person declared with any sin or any mistakes we blame him easily some time society become violent for him. In the scarlet letter Hester also facing same problem. She has to wear A (adultery) symbol because she gets pregnant and she did not say who is the father of that child. She has given birth to her child in prison and lifetime she has to suffer mentally in public place but she was happy with pearl.

What is the role played by society in Priya’s life?
Ans-
Priya finds out she is pregnant, she informs her horrified parents, and they approach Rahul's parents (Navneet Nishan, Rajeev Verma) for marriage plans, but to everyone's surprise, Rahul turns them down but Priya chooses to keep the child. Her decision prompts her father to chuck her out the house. Alone and neglected Priya is devastated, but her parents and brothers find it hard to live without her and they bring her home. She now has to face society and try to overcome the disdain of her neighbors, among others. Society virtually ostracizes her and her family. She eventually gains the support of those who had earlier disrespected her.

Compare and contrast the male characters, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, Rahul, and Ajay.

-Rahul belongs to rich family and he was egoistic character

-Arthur was priest and he belongs with religious background, but he helped Hester.

-Roger is going far from her but when he returns he was doing force to make relationship with Hester. He becomes violent also in some scene.

-Ajay is shown childhood friend of Priya, He is soft hearted, he knows everything about priya's life but he was ready to marry her and live with priya.

What are the reasons that Arthur Dimmesdale and Rahul do not come forward to accept their fatherhood? How do you they differ and what are the similarities?

Rahul is not really interested as he has many more girlfriends than he can handle. But Priya seems all the more attractive when her brothers prevent him from seeing her, and so he makes it a mission to charm her and win her over, which he does.

In the sacarlet letter Arthur Dimmesdale was a priest so he was not ready to accept fatherhood of that child but we can say he was helping her and he was giving warmth to child when they were neglected by society.
Rahul was behaving like it was just like a game and here Arthur has force of religious matter so he not able to accept fatherhood. Rahul showing ego of richness and Arthur has to follow Religious things but they both are actually selfish, because they are not taking his responsibilities.

How do you see Hester and Priya as individuals?

When Rahul turns them down but Priya chooses to keep the child. Her decision prompts her father to chuck her out the house. In the end  Priya manages to change Rahul's views as well and he decides to marry her. However, Priya has already given her heart to Ajay and they get married.

In the Scarlet letter Hester has to go in prison but she didn't said why she became pregnant and who is responsible for that. They both have faced rigid society.

Write a critical note on the end of the movie and the novel. Why do you think the novelist has not given happy ending?

Nathanial Hawthorne wants to say reality of the time and about characters, how they were treating each other in relationship. If we talk about movie than mostly director direct film as a purpose of entertain people but some directors likes to stay near the story.

This is my opinion that happy ending through females and family can satisfy to see movie because we full fill our ego When we see in the end Arthur, Hester and Pearl stay together. It is also positive message for society.

1)

#Article_15

Movie rivew on Modern Times movie.

"Modern Times" movie directed by Charlie Chaplin.
It's well framed with creative ideas.

I was thinking that this proverb of sheeple is only consider for our culture but I've seen in the movie, sheep were going and in next seen men were going in the same direction in-crowd.

CCTV and Bouncer

We think normally that CCTV and bouncers are the new idea of company owners but no in the past owners are hiring bouncers to control labour workers...
It is also prove that they were also technically intelligent because cctv through they were watching how work going on...

Life of labour (Charlie)

By nature all person are not same as our fingers, some are physically weak so here as a worker Charlie was not able to handle work properly. When any fault came at that time all workers were fighting with each other and they did not support to each others.
Labours life was like machine
Owners did experiment on Human (food eating machine) at that time comic scene created by Charlie but actually it is sad thing as a human being.

Gamin

Another important lady character which was portrayed very well that of lady Gamin, whose father was jobless so she was doing activities like stealing of food so we can say that burning issue of contemporary time of unemployment was also there.

Jail Culture

I have noticed that charlie has not any problem to go in prison because he was getting food and bed to do rest and out of jail it was hard to get roof...

Non Skill Worker

Human resource management was not proper because workers were not able to work proper than also they were hired by owners so they were making mistakes again and again so it is actually loss for development.

Dreams

As a normal person they both were dreaming one House, where they can get fresh graps at door and pure cow milk at a door. Cow given milk automatically it was showing age of machinery.

Conclusion

How was the life of workers we can see, we are shouting that past time was good than contemporary period but no actually they were suffering same issues in past.

Movie review on The Great Dictator.

 "The Great Dictator"

I have always noticed that artists have raised voice against social, political and different types of issues and Charlie Chaplin is one of them."The Great Dictator" was made in 1940.  It is a parody of Hitler and Nazi Germany was released before the United States entered the war. This is a Charlie Chaplin's first movie with sound and dialogues.

Charlie and Hitler
Charlie Chaplin is known as "polymath". He was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer. He rose to fame in the era of silent film.
Both had many similarities in birth date and month, physical appearance, popularity. Both were different in nature. Hitler is known as a cruel ruler and Chaplin known as a great comedian.
Charlie Chaplin played a double role in the movie. He was a soldier and then the role played as a Dictator.

Comedy
It is very hard to make a laugh audience and especially when you are talking about political issues and about dictatorship and here Charlie done a good job. In movie during the Oakie scenes that we get many of the film's most famous comedy moments.

Politics, dictatorship, and issues…
"The Great Dictator" movie focused on the situation of the second world war and at that time Hitler was a ruler in Germany. He was on the highest position. In the film, we can see how politics and power both played a vital role in the war and it is also the best example of political satire, how political leaders behave in front of the public. Social problems and conditions of Jewish people and different issues we can see in this movie.

"The Great Dictator" is a comic political satire.

Thinking activity on Modernist Poetry.

This blog is a part of my classroom activity in which we have to identify modern metaphors in these short poems. Before starting this, it is necessary to understand about Modernism.

What is Modernism?

Image result for modernism

Modernism is a period in literary history which started around the early 1990s and continued until the early 1940s. This movement rejected traditional values and techniques, and emphasized the importance of individual experience. This movement has also been driven by various social and political agenda. The Modern age been called “the age of  anxiety”

Modernism includes Imagism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Symbolism, Impressionism and Existentialism.

After 1900, we could find a lot of tremendous activities in the field of poetry as well as in the other field of literature.

Characteristic of modern poetry

Modern poetry often features disrupted syntax which refers to irregular sentence structure. Intertextuality is also an important aspect of modern poetry. In addition, many modern poems feature a stream of consciousness and use of allusion and multiple association of words which are borrowed from other culture. Modern poet also convey a sense of alienation from the worlds. The most common characteristic of modern poetry is open form and free verse which is quite different from the fixed forms and meters of traditional poetry as well as it is marked by fragmentation and juxtaposition.

1) ''The Embankment''- T.E.Hulme

Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,

flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.

Now see I

That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.

Oh, God, make small

The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,

That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.

This poem depicts the poverty of people through the use of metaphors like ‘fallen gentleman’, ‘Finesse of fiddles’, ‘Flash of gold hills’, ‘Star eaten blanket’. It may be related with sexual temptation. The metaphor fallen gentleman symbolize those who succumbed to sexual temptations and ruined his life emotionally and financially.

2) "Darkness"- by Joseph Campbell

I stop to watch a star shine in the boghole –

A star no longer, but a silver ribbon of light.

I look at it, and pass on.

The theme of this poem  seems quite against of the Victorian theme of poetry. The title of the poem as well as 1st and 2nd lines of the poem presents the contradiction between dark and shiny star, by using this it may tell about the illusion of life.

3) "Image"- by Edward Storer

"Forsaken lovers,

Burning to a chaste white moon

upon strange pyres of loneliness and drought".

Generally the metaphor of love is used to reflect the connection of heart between two people but here the poet used it as something which burns the lovers. It represents the idea of loneliness among the modern people.

4)  “In a station of the Metro” – Ezra pound

The apparition of these faces in the crowd:

Petals on a wet, black bough.

This is a very short modern written by Ezra Pound. It is considered as the first haiku written in English but it lacks the traditional structure of haiku. "Petals on wet black bought" is a very good metaphor used by poet. Through this metaphor poet tells about the faces of individual in the metro. Lifelessness of the people of city is reflected in this poem.

 5)"The pool"- by Hilda Doolittle

"Are you alive?

I touched you

you quiver trembling like a sea fish

I cover you with my net

What are you banded one?

In a very different way this poem start with a question which is related existentialism and it is considered as a one of the important aspect of modern literature. The metaphor seafish seems to suggest that the life of modern people is controlled by authority.

6) "Insouciance"- By Richard Aldington

"In and out of the dreary trenches

Trudging cheerily under the stars

I make for myself little poems

Delicate as a flock of dovesin

Thy fly away like white-winged Doves.

This poem speaks about how people were living in modern age.  The word dreary trenches presents the loneliness in the life of modern people. In that isolation they try to relief themselves by writing down their feelings in a words. As poet says that, ‘I make for myself little poems’ through this poet express his feeling in isolation.

 7) “Morning at the Window”- T.S.Eliot

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

This short poem is a depiction of modern England. It highlights the issue of poverty faced by poor people who were living in slum area. We can find modern metaphors like , brown waves’, ‘twisted faces’, ‘aimless smile’ and ‘muddy skirt’ – it also gives an  idea about the poverty.

8) "The Red wheelbarrow- William carols William

 so much depends
upon

a red wheel
barrow

glazed with rain
water

beside the white
chickens
It is well known short poem by William carols William. In this poem we find a modern metaphors like a red wheelborrow’ and ‘white chicken’.  This metaphor are connected with field of agriculture. It represents the craftsmanship of farmer.

9) “Anecdote of the jar”-  Wallace Stevens

I placed a jar in Tennessee,

And round it was, upon a hill.

It made the slovenly wilderness

Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it,

And sprawled around, no longer wild.

The jar was round upon the ground

And tall and of a port in air.

It took dominion everywhere.

The jar was gray and bare.

It did not give of bird or bush,

Like nothing else in Tennessee.

Like a John Keats’s “The Grecian Urn”, this poem is also a exaggeration of the picture of jar. Thorough this poem poet also mocks on the industrialization of modern century. By using the metaphor jar poet provides us a vision to look at nature in a good manner.

10)   “ I” – E.E.Cummings

“A leaf falls with loneliness”

The poem is very short but it has very deep and various meanings. In this one line poem isolation is at the central idea of it. The leaf is fallen because of loneliness that’s why we can connect this idea with the idea of death.
