The
Monkey's Paw
"The
Monkey's Paw" is a classic supernatural story that doubles as a horror
story and a cautionary tale written by W.W.Jacobs. The story is divided into three
parts and revolves around the White family.
'Be
careful what you wish for, you may receive it'
Part
I open on a dark night when three members of the White family are quite in the relaxing mood in their house and the Herbert White was playing chess with his
father.
In
between their family friend Sergeant Major Morris arrives for a visit and tells
a story of his exploits abroad. Mr. And Mrs. White urges him to tell the whole
thing. Sergeant Morris took a small mummified paw out of his pocket and
explained that a fakir placed a spell on the paw to prove that people's lives
are governed by fate and that it is dangerous to meddle with fate. This paw
allowed three men to wish on the paw three times each. Major Sergeant shared
his own experience about it and also of another man who had his third wish to ask
for death. Mr. Sergeant wanted to sell this Paw but without proof of its
effect no one was ready to buy it and as a result, he threw it into the fire but
was rescued by Mr. White though he was warned three times by Sergeant. Then consequently.
The first part ended as Mr. White wished for two hundred pounds but nothing happened
and they thought that paw was a hoax.
In
the second part The White's get money from Herbert's factory but later on, accidentally he was pulled into a machine and mangled to death. Because of this Mrs.
White made a second wish to bring her son back from grebe as he died 10
days ago. As like earlier nothing happened immediately. After that, they heard
something arriving at their door and a loud knocking began. Mrs. White felt
that her son might return whereas Mr. White was not sure of it. Somehow Mrs.
White wasn't able to open the door as she was dragging a chair to the door.
Becoming a very furious Mr. White made the third wish to return whatever is at
the door. After that Mrs. White opened the door but unfortunately she didn't
find anything except a gloomy night.
